We keep a computer based system to help us contact you in case of illness or accidents. Please let us know any helpful medical information.

The school has in place a child protection policy which is designed to ensure that your child is safe and protected in school. Special Educational Needs (S.E.N.)
Inevitably some children will find learning or 'fitting in' a difficult process and we will make full provision for them. They naturally share in the normal classroom activities for most of the day, but are given extra help by a well-qualified specialist teacher, who works with small groups and individuals on a regular basis. Sometimes those children who require extra help go to the SEN teacher's room whilst at other times the SEN teacher works alongside the children in the classroom. Parents are informed when their child is recieving extra help and are encouraged to discuss their children's work, progress and behaviour with the SEN teacher at any appointment time.

The school also has a Special Unit for children with moderate learning difficulties. The unit serves the greater North Down area and children are allocated places by the SEELB in consultation with the school and the pupil's parents according to their statement of educational need. Back to top
Homework
As parents you naturally wish to help your child at home and share your child's acquistion of knowledge and skills. Homework will vary from the practice of skills learnt in school such as tables, number bonds, reading, handwriting and spellings, to investigative work, research work or collecting and using materials. In whichever situation it is, your interest, encouragement and help are vitally important. Please provide your child with a time, and a suitable environment, to do their homework. If you have any queries about homework please raise them with the class teacher. Back to top
Teaching
The school is staffed by well qualified and enthusiastic teachers who are dedicated to providing the best education for your child.

Your child may work sometimes as an individual, sometimes as a member of a group and sometimes as a member of a whole class, depending upon the nature of the activity. With a balance of these approaches, the teacher is able to create opportunities when your child can benefit, on an individual basis, from the teacher's expertise and professional guidance. Consultations
The door to Clandeboye is always open to you. If you have a query or problem, however small, in which you feel that we can be of assistance, please do not hesiatae to contact us immediately. We believe that there should be close contact and co-operation between home and school in the best interests of the child. Occasionally you or a teacher may wish to initiate a parent / teacher consultation. If it concerns education in any way, then we will do our best to help you, but please make an appointment if possible. Back to top
Illness at school
If your child becomes ill or has an accident at school, we will attempt to contact you, so that you are able to take him/her home or to a doctor. If we cannot contact you and medical help appears to be necessary, we will arrange for your child to be taken to hospital for examination and possible treatment. Please never send a sick child to school. If in doubt, keeping them at home is preferable. Back to top
Educational Visits
Educational visits play an integral part of our active and environmental based curricular activities. Your help and encouragement is asked for in supporting such activities. Children from P1 upwards visit local places of interest as part of science, history and geography work. In P6, pupils have the opportunity to participate in a residential field trip to the Mournes area whilst in P7 they are given the opportunity of a residential trip to Scotland. Back to top
Charging policy
Payment for trips, music tutition, swimming instruction etc. is on a voluntary basis, in accordance with the charging policy as drawn up by the Board of Governors - a copy of which is available on request. Back to top
Medicines in school
On occasions your child may have a medicine prescribed by the doctor and yet be fit to attend school. If your child requires medicine to be administered during the day please plan the dosage so that your child does not have to take it through the school day. Staff will only administer medication under the following conditions if parents are unable to administer the medication themselves:
* The medicine must be accompanied by a letter signed by you as the parent
* The medicine must be labelled with your child's name and the name of the medicine as well as the dosage and clear written instructions. The smallest practical dose should be brought to school.
* The medicine must not be brought to school by your child. You must bring the medicine and give it, with instructions, to the class teacher. It will then be stored in a safe place.

If you have any queries regarding medicines in school, please do not hesitate to contact us. It should be understood that medicines are administered in school as a last resort. Back to top
Sport and After School Activities
Pupils are offered a range of sports activities which may include football, hockey, athletics, netball, badminton, table tennis, swimming, kwik-cricket and mini-rugby.

After school activities include: football, rugby, tennis, hockey, gymnastics, netball, ju-jitsu, cookery, Christmas crafts, computer club and cycling proficiency. Back to top
Reports and Assessment of Progress
A full report reflecting the year's work is issued in June. Records of progress throughout the school are maintained for all children. These are available to the teachers here and also when pupils transfer to a new school. Children are formally assessed each year using standardised tests in English and Mathematics. Back to top
Jewellery
The safety of the children is our prime concern and earrings pose our greatest safety problem. if worn they must be restricted to the 'stud' type and pupils should be able to remove and replace them themselves for any kind of physical activity. Other jewellery including watches should not be worn - not only is it unnecessary, but the school will not accept responsibility for any form jewellery should it be damaged, stolen of lost. Nor will it accept responsibility for any injury to the child, or any other child, which is caused by the wearing of jewellery. Children should not bring toys to school, unless specifically requested by a teacher. Back to top
Music
Children are auditioned for a woodwind instrument in P4 or P5. If they are successful they will receive weekly tuition by a tutor from the SEELB school of Music. The tutor is Mr. Colin Loughead.

For those who have been selected to play a musical instrument these music lessons become part of the curriculum. Back to top
Choir
Our school is widely recognised, it performs at various community events and was commended in ITV's 'Choir of the Year' competition. Children who are successful in their audition for choir have weekly practices in school. Back to top
Religious Education
In all schools there is a daily act of worship. These collective acts are led by the Headteacher, members of staff, children and visiting clergy, They are all of a non-denominational nature. The visiting clergy will visit the assembly several times a year in a pastoral capacity.

The teaching of Religious is compulsory in all schools and, like the collective acts of worship, are non-denominational in nature whilst be Christian in content.

The parental option remains: a child may be with drawn from attending the collective acts of worship and religious instruction in the classroom at the written request of the parent. Back to top
